Do All Dogs Want To Please?

This one is probably one of the most common ones out there and unfortunately it is one that a lot of dog trainers subscribe to.

Let’s take this one logically, if all dogs in fact had this desire to please, wouldn’t the dog training industry be dead? There’s a reason dog training is a booming industry. It’s because dog’s want to please “THEMSELVES”. Not you.

I love dogs, but I love them for other reasons other than their desire to “please”. I love them because they provide me with an opportunity to communicate, co-exist, and form a bond with a different species. One that can be very powerful.

There are in fact a lot of dogs that like to cooperate, but don’t be mistaken, there’s an agenda behind that as well. I’m not saying they’re selfish animals that don’t give a crap about you. I’m just saying they’re animals with similar traits as yours. They are capable of giving affection and even compassion.

If you want to get a better relationship with your dog, you need to understand that dogs are animals that want to improve their situation and that very likely you’re not their top priority. Only then will you be in a better position to love your dog for what it is, including some of their shortcomings.
